P0178 — Fuel Composition Sensor Circuit Low

P0178 indicates the fuel composition (flex fuel) sensor signal circuit is reporting a voltage lower than the calibrated range. The sensor tells the engine computer the ethanol-to-gasoline ratio of the fuel so the computer can adjust fueling and timing. A 'low' reading usually means the signal wire is shorted to ground, the sensor has failed, or a related reference/ground circuit is compromised.

5. PCM fault (rare)

A faulty internal PCM driver or analog-to-digital circuit could misread a valid sensor voltage as too low, but this is uncommon and should be confirmed only after wiring and sensor testing.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve freeze-frame data and compare the reported fuel composition / ethanol percentage with actual fuel content and expected sensor voltage range.
  2. Visually inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, or signs of short-to-ground near exhaust or frame components.
  3. With the key on and engine off, check the sensor's reference voltage, ground, and signal voltage against manufacturer specifications; a signal near 0 V points to a short or failed sensor.
  4. Disconnect the sensor and recheck the signal circuit voltage; if the voltage returns to normal, the sensor is likely faulty. If it stays low, locate the short in the wiring or connector.
  5. Perform a sensor resistance/output test per service information; replace only verified failed components, and consider PCM replacement only if all wiring and sensor tests are normal and the issue is reproducible.
