What the terms mean

Torque — the rotational force a fastener is tightened to, in lb-ft (pound-feet) or Nm (newton-metres) — 1 lb-ft ≈ 1.356 Nm.

Lug-nut torque — the wheel-fastener spec; under- or over-tightening warps brake rotors or strips studs.

Torque sequence — the order — often a star or criss-cross pattern — fasteners are tightened in so a part (head, wheel, cover) seats evenly.

Torque-to-yield (TTY) — a bolt tightened past its elastic limit — a torque angle after a seating torque — and typically single-use.
