P0171 — System Too Lean Bank 1

P0171 indicates the engine control module has detected a lean air-fuel mixture on Bank 1 (the engine bank containing cylinder #1). The oxygen sensor reports consistently low voltage, meaning excess air is entering the combustion chambers relative to fuel. The PCM attempts to compensate by adding fuel but cannot achieve the target mixture.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Vacuum leak

Unmetered air entering the intake manifold through cracked hoses, faulty PCV valve, damaged intake gasket, or throttle body issues causes excess air to bypass the MAF sensor.

2. Low fuel pressure

Weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or failing fuel pressure regulator cannot deliver adequate fuel to the injectors despite normal injector operation.

3. Dirty or failed MAF sensor

Contaminated mass air flow sensor provides inaccurate air flow readings to the PCM, causing incorrect fuel calculations.

4. Faulty oxygen sensor

Failed upstream O2 sensor may report consistently lean readings even when the mixture is correct, or fail to detect actual lean conditions.

5. Exhaust leak before O2 sensor

Leaking exhaust manifold or header allows ambient air to enter the exhaust stream, causing false lean readings at the oxygen sensor.

6. PCM/ECM fault

Rarely, the engine control module itself may have a software or hardware fault causing incorrect fuel trims; this is the least likely cause and should be diagnosed only after all other possibilities are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Connect OBD-II scanner and verify P0171 is present; check freeze frame data for fuel trim values (Long Term Fuel Trim significantly positive indicates system is adding fuel compensation
  2. Perform visual inspection of all vacuum hoses, intake manifold gaskets, and PCV system for cracks or disconnections
  3. Use a smoke machine to introduce visible vapor into the intake system and identify vacuum leak locations
  4. Test fuel pressure at the rail with key on engine off and at idle; compare specifications
  5. Inspect and test the MAF sensor; clean with approved cleaner if contaminated, replace if readings are out of range
  6. Check upstream O2 sensor operation and heater circuit; verify sensor is cycling properly
  7. Inspect exhaust manifold and flex pipe for leaks before the O2 sensor
  8. If all other causes are ruled out, consider PCM reprogramming or replacement as a last resort
