1983 Ford LTD

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1983 LTD.

The 1983 Ford LTD, a model that carried a 4.0‑quart oil capacity and was recommended to use 5W‑30, 10W‑30, or 10W‑40 API oil, entered the market with five total owner complaints, most of which related to the electrical system, and two recall campaigns were issued. Its complaint count exceeds the peak of three complaints recorded in 1991 within the 1990‑2000 data set, yet it is lower than the earlier high of five but still marks an early reliability benchmark. As the later years saw the lowest complaint total of one in 1993, the 1983 figures illustrate a transitional phase in which electrical‑system issues were the primary concern before improvements took hold.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The federal record spans 1990 through 2000, documenting this model’s aging phase with consistently minimal complaint activity (one to three annually), zero recalls across all years, and TSBs emerging only after 1991, peaking at four in 1996 before dropping to zero by 2000. Because the 1983 model year predates the earliest entry in the federal record, it falls outside this documented arc, meaning the available data captures only the vehicle’s later service life rather than its production run or early ownership period. Specific to 1983, the data shows two complaints each for Electrical and Powertrain systems, one for Engine Cooling, and notably two fire complaints—though the data does not specify their root causes—alongside zero crash complaints. This concentration of fire-related incidents, paired with the complete absence of recall campaigns in the federal record spanning up to seventeen years of service, suggests latent safety vulnerabilities that were never formally addressed. While overall complaint volumes remain low, the specific fire risk and electrical system complaints make 1983 a questionable acquisition unless thorough pre-purchase inspection of fuel lines and wiring can verify integrity.
