4. Engine mechanical issues

Low compression from worn rings, leaking valves, a blown head gasket, or incorrect valve timing can prevent proper combustion. Mechanical problems tend to affect multiple cylinders when timing, head sealing, or overall engine wear is involved.

5. Sensor or wiring faults

6. PCM/software failure

  4. Test for intake air leaks using a smoke test, propane enrichment, or listening for hissing; verify mass airflow and manifold absolute pressure sensor readings.
  5. Perform a compression test and verify mechanical timing, valve operation, and head gasket integrity if misfires persist after ignition and fuel checks.
  6. Review live sensor data and scope waveforms for the crank/cam sensors; consider PCM or software issues only after all physical causes are eliminated.
