Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1997 318I.
The 1997 BMW 318I, built on the E36 platform, carries a 5.3-quart engine oil capacity with manufacturer recommendations spanning 15W-40 to 10W-30 viscosity grades meeting API SJ standards, and achieves EPA fuel economy ratings of 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined when paired with its 4-speed automatic transmission. This model year registered just 6 total owner complaints with the electrical system emerging as the primary concern, alongside a single recall, positioning it within a notably quieter window of the model's longitudinal complaint history spanning 1991 to 1997. Compared to the 1994 peak of 14 complaints and the 1996 low of just 3, the 1997 iteration reflects a period of moderate but not exceptional reliability, suggesting owners during this production year experienced fewer widespread issues than some earlier and later generations of the E36 318I.

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.
The 1997 BMW 318I recorded 6 complaints, 1 recall, 0 investigations, and 4 TSBs. That complaint count sits well below the 1994–1995 peak of 14 complaints per year and the 1998 rebound to 11, and only slightly above the generation low of 3 complaints in 1996. Recalls also stayed low in 1997 at one, down from a high of three in 1992 and in line with a broader downward trend that reaches zero by 1998 and 2001, while TSBs fell from a peak of six in 1995–1996 to four. The top complaint areas were Electrical System and Tires with two complaints each, plus one each for Engine & Engine Cooling and Visibility, and crash and fire complaints were both zero, though the data does not specify root causes. Overall, 1997 falls near the quieter end of the federal-record arc for this generation, making it a comparatively good year to buy—provided the specific vehicle has a clean service and recall-completion history.
