1996 BMW 318I

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1996 318I.

Transmission Automatic 4-spd

The 1996 BMW 318I is an E36-platform model equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission and a service regimen specifying 5.3 quarts of API SJ oil in 15W-40, 10W-40, or 10W-30 viscosity grades, while EPA estimates rate it at 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. Within the 1991–2001 model span, this year registers the lowest complaint volume of the entire run at just three owner reports, with air bags cited as the top concern and a single recall on file. That tally makes 1996 the most complaint-free year in the eleven-year history, standing apart from the fourteen complaints logged for the 1994 model.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 1996 model year represents a statistical low point for consumer complaints within this generation, recording only 3 complaints compared to 14 in both 1994 and 1995. While Technical Service Bulletins remained high at 6, matching the 1995 peak, the federal recall count decreased to 1, which is equal to the 1997 model year but lower than the 3 recalls seen in 1992. Specific federal data for 1996 highlights Air Bags and Power Train as the top complaint areas, accounting for 2 and 1 incidents respectively, with 2 crash complaints recorded. This sharp decline in reported issues contrasts with the subsequent rise to 11 complaints in 1998, placing the 1996 model at the most favorable point in the provided dataset. Consequently, the 1996 BMW 318I appears to be a strong candidate for purchase based on its superior federal safety and reliability record relative to adjacent model years.
