1988 Volkswagen Scirocco

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1988 Scirocco.

Transmission Manual 5-spd

The 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco arrived with a 5-speed manual transmission and EPA fuel-economy ratings of 19/26/22 mpg, while routine engine service calls for a 3.7-quart oil capacity filled with viscosity grades including 2W-40, 20W-50, and 15W-40 API SL. Within the model’s reliability history, this model year stands as notably calm, having generated only three owner complaints—led by the fuel system, gasoline category—alongside a single recall. That sparse record makes it a comparatively stable benchmark for researchers examining the Scirocco’s long-term durability.

Factory maintenance schedule OEM · verified

Normal service, condensed from the factory interval matrix.

Under the factory schedule, replace the engine oil and filter at 7,500 mi; spark plugs every 30,000 mi; coolant every 7,500 mi. The big-interval services (every 7,500 mi for coolant, and the transmission fluid) are the ones owners most often skip — on a lower-mileage example, assume the original fluids are still in it and check them first.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

Owner complaints about the 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco dominate in one area — the fuel system, gasoline, 3 of 3 reports (100%), well ahead of the next concern. That matters, because the fuel system, gasoline are also the target of recall 91V-201 on this vehicle — so the single most useful check before buying or servicing one is confirming it was actually performed. 0 of the reports describe a crash and 0 a fire — a small share of the total, but worth weighing against the fuel system, gasoline pattern above. These are tallies of what owners actually reported to the federal government, not an editorial score — and higher-selling models naturally rack up more reports.
