2022 Volkswagen Jetta

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 2022 Jetta.

Transmission Automatic (S8)

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is a compact sedan built on Volkswagen’s MQB platform and equipped with an automatic S8 transmission, delivering an EPA‑rated 31 mpg city, 41 mpg highway and a combined 35 mpg. Its drivetrain efficiency stands out in a segment where fuel economy is a primary buying factor, while the model registers only 41 total owner complaints and a single recall, with service brakes identified as the most frequent issue. Compared with the broader Jetta record—from 1990 through 2026—the 2022 year falls toward the low end of the reliability spectrum, approaching the 2026 low‑complaint benchmark of three reports and far below the 2009 peak of 903 complaints, indicating a relatively solid reliability standing for this generation.

Inspection Procedure (Lower) — tightening sequence 1 stages
1Inspect Ball Joint by pulling down on lower control arm then forcing it upward. The joint should also be inspected by moving the lower portion of the tire and wheel in an in and out motion. During inspections allow for normal upper strut mount and wheel bearing wear but no ball joint play should be observed. Step 3: The ball joint should also be replaced if the boot is torn, stud is worn or joint shows any play.

Factory maintenance schedule OEM · verified

Normal service, condensed from the factory interval matrix.

Under the factory schedule, replace the engine oil and filter every 10,000 mi; spark plugs every 80,000 mi; coolant every 20,000 mi. The big-interval services (every 20,000 mi for coolant, and the transmission fluid) are the ones owners most often skip — on a lower-mileage example, assume the original fluids are still in it and check them first.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The seventh-generation Jetta, introduced in 2019, saw a spike of 537 complaints and 11 recalls that year, but the numbers dropped sharply to 51 complaints and 6 recalls in 2020, then continued to decline. By 2021, complaints fell to 66 with 4 recalls, and the 2022 model year further improved to just 41 complaints and a single recall, with no investigations. The top complaint areas for 2022 are service brakes (9) and engine (6), but these are modest figures within the generation’s arc of decreasing issues. With only one crash complaint and no fire complaints, the 2022 Jetta represents a mature point in the generation’s lifecycle, offering a low-risk used purchase.
