Inspection Procedure (Lower) — tightening sequence 1 stages
1Inspect Ball Joint by pulling down on lower control arm then forcing it upward. The joint should also be inspected by moving the lower portion of the tire and wheel in an in and out motion. During inspections allow for normal upper strut mount and wheel bearing wear but no ball joint play should be observed. Step 3: The ball joint should also be replaced if the boot is torn, stud is worn or joint shows any play.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 represents a notable low point in complaints within this generation, recording 133 complaints compared to 319 in 2021 and a sharp spike to 442 in 2023. Recalls also decreased from 11 in 2021 to 7 in 2022, though the 2 investigations remained constant, suggesting ongoing regulatory scrutiny. TSBs dropped from 387 to 317, indicating fewer technical service bulletins being issued, which often correlates with maturing hardware. The top complaint areas were unspecified "Unknown Or Other" issues (16), followed by electrical system problems (9), exterior lighting (5), and structure concerns (5), with 15 crash-related complaints and 1 fire complaint on record. The 2022 model year appears to sit in a trough before the significant complaint surge in 2023, potentially indicating a more stable production run. This data suggests the 2022 ID.4 may be a relatively safer buy within this generation compared to later model years, though the 2 ongoing investigations warrant verification that any related recalls have been completed.
