2. Damaged sensor wiring or harness

The wiring leading to the downstream EGT sensor passes through the hot underbody and is exposed to heat, vibration, road debris, and exhaust-soak conditions. Melted, chafed, or broken wires are a frequent cause of range/performance faults.

3. Corroded or loose sensor connector

Moisture, road salt, and high exhaust heat can corrode the sensor's electrical connector or its pins, causing high resistance, intermittent contact, or an open circuit that confuses the PCM.

4. Open or short circuit in the sensor signal or ground path

An open in the signal wire, a short to ground, or a short to voltage anywhere between the sensor and the PCM can place the reading outside the expected range. Connector terminal tension loss is also common.

5. Exhaust system condition causing implausible temperature

A heavily loaded DPF, a restricted or failing SCR catalyst, or excessive soot loading can cause the downstream temperature to be abnormal. The sensor is then reporting correctly, but its reading is flagged because it does not match expected values for current engine conditions.

6. Faulty powertrain control module (PCM)

A failed PCM or its input circuitry is an uncommon cause of P2488 and should be considered only after the sensor, wiring, connector, and exhaust condition have all been ruled out. Replacing the PCM on a guess is one of the most common and most expensive misdiagnoses for this code.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored DTCs and freeze-frame data with a scan tool, noting engine load, coolant temperature, RPM, and EGT sensor value at the time the code set.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the Bank 2 Sensor 5 EGT sensor, its wiring harness, and connector for heat damage, chafing, corrosion, bent pins, or contamination from oil or coolant.
  3. Connect a scan tool with live data and observe the Bank 2 Sensor 5 reading across a full warm-up, idle, and load. Compare the value to a known-good Bank 1 sensor at the same location to see whether the suspect reading is stuck, erratic, or simply implausible.
  4. Unplug the sensor and measure its resistance with a digital multimeter at ambient temperature, then compare to the manufacturer's specification; an open circuit, short, or resistance well outside spec indicates a failed sensor element.
  5. With the sensor disconnected, check the harness side for proper reference voltage, ground, and signal return from the PCM, and check for shorts to ground or voltage on the signal wire.
  6. If the sensor and wiring are good, evaluate the condition of the DPF, SCR catalyst, and downstream exhaust for excessive restriction, contamination, or temperature loading that could explain a persistently abnormal reading.
