2017 Nissan Rogue

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 2017 Rogue.

Body SUVTransmission Automatic (variable gear ratios)

The 2017 Nissan Rogue is a compact SUV featuring an automatic transmission with variable gear ratios and requiring 4.9 quarts of 5W-30 API-grade engine oil for maintenance. With EPA fuel economy ratings of 25/32/27 mpg across city/highway/combined cycles, the Rogue delivered competitive efficiency for its segment. The 2017 model year recorded 591 total owner complaints with 5 associated recalls, placing it within a complaint history spanning 1999 to 2026 where complaints ranged from a low of 1 in 1999 to a high of 654 in 2023. This positions the 2017 Rogue's complaint volume as moderate relative to the model's historical range, though its recall count and complaint distribution warrant attention during pre-purchase evaluation.

Service quick specs OEM factory data

Capacities, torques and tune-up values from the factory service manual.

This engine holds 4.9 qt of 5W-30 API engine oil, 80W-90 · GL-5 in the differential, DOT 3 brake fluid. Torque lug nuts to 83 ft-lbs. The firing order is 1-3-4-2. Note the cylinder-head bolts finish on a torque angle (torque-to-yield) — they stretch permanently and should be replaced, not reused, during any head service.

Normal service, condensed from the factory interval matrix.

Under the factory schedule, replace the engine oil and filter every 5,000 mi; spark plugs at 105,000 mi; coolant at 105,000 mi. The big-interval services (at 105,000 mi for coolant, and the transmission fluid) are the ones owners most often skip — on a lower-mileage example, assume the original fluids are still in it and check them first.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 2017 Rogue sits at the complaint peak of its generation with 591 reports, edging past 2016's 536 and nearly matching 2018's 609, while recalls dropped to five from the nine-to-ten range seen in 2014-2015. Technical service bulletins also declined to 261 from 322 in 2016, suggesting manufacturer response was shifting from field fixes to formal recalls. The top complaint categories — Unknown/Other (80), Power Train (74), Air Bags (46), and Service Brakes (44) — plus 57 crash and eight fire complaints, indicate broad but unspecified trouble areas; the data does not specify root causes. Investigations held at two for both 2017 and 2018 before complaints fell sharply to 330 in 2019. This model year carries the highest complaint volume of the mid-generation run with only moderate recall relief. Consider 2017 only if the price reflects elevated risk and you can verify resolution of power-train, brake, and air-bag campaigns.
