1993 Mitsubishi Precis

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1993 Precis.

Body PASSENGER CARTransmission Automatic 4-spd

The 1993 Mitsubishi Precis is a passenger car pairing its engine exclusively with a four-speed automatic transmission and returning EPA figures of 24 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. Service specifications are modest — 3.2 quarts of engine oil in a 20W-40, 10W-30, or 5W-30 API grade — and the trouble areas reported by owners were limited, spanning suspension, engine and engine cooling, vehicle speed control, and tires. With only three total complaints and a single recall, the 1993 model year represents one of the quietest in the Precis's 1990-1994 run, standing in sharp contrast to the 15 complaints logged in 1991 and underscoring how thoroughly the platform's early issues had been resolved by this point.

Factory maintenance schedule OEM · verified

Normal service, condensed from the factory interval matrix.

Under the factory schedule, replace the engine oil and filter at 7,500 mi; coolant every 30,000 mi. The big-interval services (every 30,000 mi for coolant, and the transmission fluid) are the ones owners most often skip — on a lower-mileage example, assume the original fluids are still in it and check them first.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

In 1993 the Precis logged only three federal complaints, a sharp decline from the 15 complaints recorded in 1991 and comparable to the low‑complaint years of 1992 (one) and 1994 (zero). Recall activity remained flat, with a single recall each year from 1992 through 1994, indicating no spike in safety‑related defects for the target year. Investigations were absent in 1993, matching the zero‑investigation trend of the surrounding years, while technical service bulletins (TSBs) held steady at four, a slight dip from the five‑bulletin years of 1990, 1991 and 1994. The three complaint categories—suspension/engine cooling/vehicle speed control/tires, fuel system, and wheels—each contributed only one report, and there were no crash or fire complaints, suggesting limited systemic issues. Overall, the 1993 model sits at a low point in the generation’s complaint/recall curve, making it a comparatively safe year to consider for purchase.
