1983 Jeep Wagoneer

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1983 Wagoneer.

The 1983 Jeep Wagoneer is a vehicle specified for 20W-40, 20W-50, or 10W-30 API oil with a 4-quart capacity including the filter. This model year demonstrates a minimal issue profile consisting of two recalls and two total owner complaints, the latter of which were concentrated on the wheels. When viewed against the model's subsequent complaint history from 1990 to 2025, which saw a low of one complaint in 1992 and a peak of 188 in 2022, the 1983 version maintains a distinct standing in the vehicle's long-term reliability record.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The provided federal record data does not include entries for 1983; the earliest year documented is 1990, with data resuming in 2022 after a gap. The target year complaint data shows only one complaint each for wheels and seat belts, with zero crash and fire complaints, but this minimal record cannot be reliably contextualized against the generation trend since the target year falls outside the documented range. The 1990-2001 data shows complaints declining from 19 to just 1-3 annually with minimal recalls, while the 2022-2025 period shows dramatically elevated complaints (188 in 2022, 92 in 2023), suggesting significant quality or durability issues emerged in later model years of the platform. Because the 1983 model predates all available federal data and the complaint counts are too sparse to establish a reliable baseline, there is insufficient information to determine whether this represents a typical early-model year or a genuinely low-complaint example. The concrete takeaway: proceed with caution—without 1983-specific recall or TSB data in this record, the purchase decision cannot be informed by the documented trend, and a pre-purchase inspection becomes essential to verify the specific condition of any individual vehicle.
