1982 Ford Mustang

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1982 Mustang.

The 1982 Ford Mustang, documented in its model overview as part of the nameplate’s core platform, recorded only a single owner complaint and one recall, with the issue focused on structure. Within the broader complaint history that spans 1990 to 2026, this model year precedes the peak of 868 complaints in 2005 and the recent low of four complaints in 2026. As a result, the 1982 Mustang represents an early period of relatively modest complaint volume, establishing a baseline before the model’s later reliability fluctuations.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 1982 Ford Mustang sits at the beginning of the federal record, with 1990 showing 114 complaints and 5 recalls, a modest level compared to the spike that begins in 1994. In the years immediately before and after 1982—though not in the data set—the trend would likely have been lower, as the 1990‑1995 window marks a gradual rise to 440 complaints and 13 recalls in 1994, then a peak of 701 complaints in 1995. The 1982 model therefore falls early in the arc, before the significant increase in complaints and recalls that characterize the mid‑1990s. The record shows no recalls or investigations for the 1982 year itself, and the only top complaint area listed is “Structure” with a single instance. With zero crash or fire complaints recorded, a 1982 Mustang appears to have fewer documented federal issues than later years. Consequently, 1982 is a comparatively cleaner year, suggesting it could be a more reliable purchase within the Mustang lineage.
