1988 Ford Festiva

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1988 Festiva.

Transmission Manual 4-spd

The 1988 Ford Festiva arrives with a manual four-speed transmission and an EPA-rated 32/36/34 mpg city/highway/combined cycle, its engine requiring 3.6 quarts of 5W-30 API oil. Reliability records show 53 owner complaints for this model year, with seat belts emerging as the top concern and two recalls issued. That complaint total exceeds the peak of 29 seen in 1993 across the broader 1990–1994 history, where counts dropped to just two by 1994, positioning the 1988 as the most complaint-prone year in the available data.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 1988 Ford Festiva is characterized by 31 complaints regarding seat belts, 7 for the electrical system, 4 for seats, and 2 for suspension. This volume of safety-related issues is significant when compared to the 1990-1993 trend, where total annual complaints ranged from 22 to 29. The 1988 model also recorded 4 fire complaints and 2 crash complaints, while subsequent years showed a trend of increasing TSBs, peaking at 45 in 1993. The data does not specify the root causes for these reported failures. Because the 1988 model exhibits a higher concentration of safety concerns than the early 1990s cohorts, this is not a good year to buy.
