1989 Chevrolet Celebrity

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1989 Celebrity.

The 1989 Chevrolet Celebrity is maintained using 4 quarts of 5W-30 API engine oil. This model year is defined by one recall and 50 total owner complaints, with the primary area of concern being the hydraulic service brakes. This reliability record precedes the 1990-1992 period, during which annual complaints peaked at eight in 1990 and dropped to a low of two in 1991.

Factory maintenance schedule OEM · verified

Normal service, condensed from the factory interval matrix.

Under the factory schedule, replace the engine oil and filter at 7,500 mi; coolant every 30,000 mi. The big-interval services (every 30,000 mi for coolant, and the transmission fluid) are the ones owners most often skip — on a lower-mileage example, assume the original fluids are still in it and check them first.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The provided federal record does not include data for 1989—it begins with 1990, the year this model would have been one model year old. However, the trend from 1990 to 1992 shows a significant decline in complaints (from 8 down to 2), with recalls dropping from 2 to 0 and investigations remaining constant at 1 across all three years. The top complaint areas for the target year (1989) include Service Brakes, Hydraulic (8), Electrical System (6), and Seat Belts (5), with 4 crash-related complaints and 2 fire-related complaints recorded. This pattern suggests that the 1989 model experienced its highest complaint volume early in its life, with issues tapering substantially by the second and third model years. Since the data indicates problems were most prevalent in the first year and diminished thereafter, a used 1989 Celebrity purchased in later years may present fewer of these specific issues, though the lack of 1989-specific longitudinal data limits precise certainty about its original condition. A concrete takeaway cannot be provided for the target year specifically due to missing data.
