Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 2014 M235i.
The 2014 BMW M235i pairs an S8 automatic transmission with EPA fuel economy ratings of 22/32/25 mpg. This first-year example carries three recalls and five total owner complaints, with the engine flagged as the primary trouble area. Within the model’s 2014–2022 complaint spectrum—ranging from a peak of eight grievances in 2016 to a single report in 2022—the 2014 edition lands near the median, presenting researchers with a moderately blemished but not anomaly-level data point for the nameplate’s early production.

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.
The 2014 M235i launched this generation with the highest recall count in the dataset at 3, paired with a moderate 5 complaints—identical to 2015's complaint volume but with one additional recall. Complaints actually peaked later, in 2016 (8), before tapering to near-zero by 2021–2022, suggesting the generation's issues were front-loaded but not concentrated in the first model year specifically. The 2014 complaint areas are broadly distributed across Engine, Structure, Air Bags/Seats, and Power Train with no single dominant category, and there are zero crash or fire complaints on record. Notably, the high TSB count (292, rising to 319 in 2015) indicates BMW was actively publishing technical service guidance during early production—consistent with a first-year model undergoing rapid refinement. The data does not specify root causes for any of these items. On balance, 2014 carries the most recall exposure of the generation but no standout complaint pattern, making it a reasonable buy provided all three recalls have been completed and service records confirm TSB-related fixes were addressed.
