Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1994 525I.
The 1994 BMW 525i, built on the E34 platform, routes its output through a 4-speed automatic transmission and calls for 6.1 quarts of 15W-40, 10W-40, or 10W-30 API SJ oil, while returning EPA estimates of 16 mpg city, 23 highway, and 19 combined. With only 8 total owner complaints and 4 recalls, this model year sits comfortably in the lower range of the E34 complaint history, which spans from a high of 49 complaints for 1990 to a low of just 1 for 1999, indicating a relatively trouble-free vintage where the power train was the most noted concern.

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.
The 1994 BMW 525I sits at a notable low point in the complaint arc for this generation. Federal complaints dropped sharply from a peak of 49 in 1990 to just 5 in 1993 before rising to 28 in 1995; 1994's 8 complaints place it squarely within this downward inflection. Recalls remained consistent at 3–4 annually across 1990–1995, with 1994 matching the period high at 4 recalls, while TSBs edged up to 5 compared to 4 in prior years. The target year's complaint categories—power train, latches/locks/linkages, and engine cooling—are diverse and non-fatal, with zero crash complaints and zero fire complaints distinguishing it from earlier high-complaint years. By contrast, 1995 shows a rebound to 28 complaints, suggesting the 1994 model year may represent a temporary quality improvement before the next escalation. The concrete takeaway: 1994 is the quietest year in the dataset for this generation's complaints, suggesting a relatively lower-risk purchase within this era, though the 4 recalls indicate ongoing manufacturer attention to systemic issues that warrant pre-purchase inspection.
