U3003 indicates that the vehicle’s control module has detected an abnormal battery voltage condition. It is a communication code used by many manufacturers to flag that the system voltage is outside the normal operating range.

1. Weak or failing battery

A battery that cannot hold charge will cause the system voltage to drop below the module’s minimum threshold.

3. Faulty alternator or voltage regulator

If the alternator does not maintain proper charging voltage, the system voltage can swing low or high enough to set U3003.

  1. Measure battery voltage at rest (engine off) and under load (engine running ~2,000 rpm); it should be ~12.6 V resting and 13.5‑14.5 V running.
  2. Inspect and clean battery terminals and cable clamps; tighten any loose connections.
  3. Perform a visual check of the alternator wiring, voltage regulator, and ground straps for damage or corrosion.
  4. Test alternator output with a volt‑meter or load tester to verify proper charging voltage across the RPM range.
  5. If external power sources test normal, conduct a voltage drop test on the harness feeding the control module to locate hidden resistance.
