U3002 — Vehicle Identification Number

Manufacturer-specificNetwork / communication

U3002 indicates that one or more control modules has detected a problem with the stored Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN may be missing, invalid, mismatched between modules, or not properly learned after a module replacement or software update. This is normally a configuration or data error rather than a hard parts failure.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Module not programmed with correct VIN after replacement or repair

This is the most common cause. A new or reflashed module often must have the vehicle's VIN written to it; if skipped, U3002 sets.

2. Corrupted VIN data from low voltage, battery disconnect, or interrupted programming

A weak battery, poor connection, or failed flash can leave a module with blank or corrupt VIN memory, triggering the code.

3. VIN mismatch between modules on the network

If modules such as the PCM, BCM, or instrument cluster report different VINs, the network integrity check can log U3002.

4. Aftermarket intervention or unauthorized reprogramming

Non-factory tuning, cloned modules, or improper diagnostic tools can alter or erase the stored VIN.

5. Communication fault on the data network

Wiring or connector problems that prevent a module from receiving the VIN message may set this code, usually alongside other U-codes.

6. Internal module failure

Rarely, a control module cannot retain the VIN due to internal memory failure; this should be considered only after reprogramming and wiring checks fail.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Compare the VIN shown by a scan tool against the vehicle tag and identify which module logged U3002
  2. Check battery/charging system condition and ask whether any module was recently replaced, reflashed, or disconnected
  3. Use a capable scan tool to program or relearn the correct VIN into the affected module, then clear the code and retest
  4. If the code returns, inspect network wiring and connectors for the affected module, especially if other communication codes are present
  5. If reprogramming fails and no wiring or power issue exists, evaluate the module itself

Frequently asked

Is U3002 a serious problem?

It rarely affects how the vehicle drives, but it can cause inspection failures and may disable security or convenience features that rely on a correct VIN.

Do I need to replace the PCM or ECM for U3002?

Usually no. Most cases are fixed by writing the correct VIN into the module. PCM/ECM failure is an uncommon cause.

Can a dead battery cause U3002?

Yes, low voltage or an interrupted programming event can corrupt or erase stored VIN data and trigger this code.

Can I keep driving with U3002?

Generally yes, but you should have it corrected promptly so the VIN is correct across all modules.
