U0020 — Low Speed Can Communication Bus Performance

U0020 means the powertrain or network gateway module has detected a performance problem on the low-speed Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The low-speed CAN usually carries body, chassis, and convenience-module data, so this code indicates messages are missing, corrupted, or arriving outside expected timing.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty module on the low-speed CAN bus

A door module, climate-control module, instrument cluster, BCM, or other node can fail internally and pull the bus low or high, corrupting communication for the whole network.

2. Wiring or connector fault in the CAN bus

Open, short-to-power, short-to-ground, chafed harness, water intrusion, or poor pin contact in the low-speed CAN pair disrupts signal integrity.

3. Aftermarket electrical accessory or alarm interference

Poorly installed remote-start, alarm, trailer wiring, or charger can introduce noise or load the bus, causing intermittent U0020 codes.

4. Power or ground supply problem

A weak battery, loose battery cable, corroded ground, or charging-system issue can cause voltage transients that make CAN messages appear corrupt.

5. PCM/ECM or gateway module failure

The engine computer or gateway can set U0020 if it cannot interpret the bus, but this is uncommon; it should be considered only after wiring and all other modules are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored DTCs from every module and note which modules do or do not communicate; this points to the affected branch of the network.
  2. Inspect battery voltage, charging system, and main ground points; low system voltage is a common trigger for false communication codes.
  3. Visually inspect low-speed CAN wiring and connectors for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, and water intrusion, especially near doors, pillars, and the BCM.
  4. Disconnect or disable aftermarket electrical accessories and retest to see if communication returns to normal.
  5. Isolate modules one at a time by disconnecting suspected nodes and monitoring bus voltage/resistance or scan-tool communication to identify the offending module.
  6. If all wiring, grounds, modules, and power supply check out, then evaluate the PCM/gateway as a last resort.
