P2505 indicates the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormal voltage condition on its main power input circuit. The module continuously monitors its supply voltage; if voltage falls below, exceeds, or becomes unstable relative to calibrated thresholds, this code is stored.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Weak or failing battery

A battery that cannot maintain sufficient voltage under load or during cranking will cause the PCM to detect low system voltage.

2. Charging system malfunction

An alternator that over-charges, under-charges, or produces excessive AC ripple can trigger the code.

3. High resistance in PCM power feed circuit

Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring, terminals, or fuse-block contacts between the battery/ignition switch and the PCM create voltage drop.

4. Faulty ignition switch or run/start relay

Worn ignition switch contacts or a failing relay can supply intermittent or low voltage to the PCM power input.

5. PCM internal power-supply circuit failure

Internal voltage-regulator or monitoring-circuit failure inside the PCM is possible but rare compared to external wiring and battery issues.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify battery state of charge and perform load test; repair or replace battery if marginal.
  2. Test charging system output voltage and AC ripple at idle and under load; repair alternator or belt drive if out of specification.
  3. Using a wiring diagram, measure voltage at the PCM power feed pin(s) with the key in RUN and during cranking; compare to battery voltage to identify excessive drop.
  4. Inspect and clean all power-circuit connections, fuse-block terminals, and ground paths associated with the PCM supply.
  5. If power and ground are confirmed correct at the PCM connector while the code is active, follow manufacturer-specific pinpoint tests for internal PCM verification before considering module replacement.
