P2504 indicates that the powertrain control module has detected charging system voltage above its calibrated limit. This usually means the alternator or voltage regulator is producing excessive electrical output, or the circuit that reports system voltage to the PCM is faulty. If left unaddressed, the condition can damage the battery and vehicle electronics.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty voltage regulator or alternator

The internal regulator may fail in a way that commands maximum alternator output continuously, pushing system voltage beyond the normal range. This is the most common source of true overcharging.

2. Corroded or loose battery cables and grounds

High resistance at cable terminals or ground points can cause the regulator to sense low voltage and overcompensate, or create an erroneous high reading at the PCM.

3. Charging system sense circuit fault

A short-to-voltage, open, or high resistance in the wiring that carries voltage feedback to the PCM can generate a falsely high signal.

4. PCM internal sensing circuit failure

Although extremely uncommon, a rare internal fault within the PCM can misinterpret a normal charging voltage as excessive.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve the code and review freeze-frame data to confirm when the overvoltage condition occurred.
  2. With the engine running, measure DC voltage directly at the battery terminals with a calibrated digital multimeter and compare it to the scan tool data.
  3. Inspect all battery cables, terminal clamps, and engine/chassis grounds for corrosion, looseness, or thermal damage; clean and tighten as required.
  4. If actual voltage is excessive, perform an alternator and regulator output test under load; repair or replace the alternator assembly if output cannot be regulated.
  5. If actual voltage is normal but the PCM reports high voltage, inspect the charging system monitor circuit for wiring shorts to voltage or opens; only consider PCM service after all other causes are ruled out.
