P2405 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a low voltage signal on the sense circuit of the evaporative emission (EVAP) leak detection pump. This pump is used to pressurize the EVAP system during self-diagnostic leak tests, and the sense circuit tells the PCM whether the pump is cycling correctly. The fault is logged when the feedback signal does not match what the PCM expects during the test.

A cracked, collapsed, or disconnected hose can prevent the pump from building expected pressure, causing the sense signal to read low during the test.

4. Open or short to ground in the sense circuit

A broken wire or a short between the sense line and chassis ground pulls the signal low. This is distinct from a bad connector and must be traced with a wiring diagram.

5. Faulty switching valve associated with the LDP

Some systems use a changeover or cutoff valve that must open for the pump to operate correctly. A stuck-closed valve will keep the sense circuit in its low state.

6. PCM driver issue (rare)

In uncommon cases the PCM's internal driver or reference circuit for the LDP sense line is faulty. This should only be considered after the pump, wiring, hoses, and valves have all been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored and pending codes with a scan tool and document freeze-frame data for P2405.
  2. Command the leak detection pump on with the scan tool while watching its sense-circuit parameter; a signal that stays low confirms the fault is active.
  3. Perform a visual and physical inspection of the LDP harness and connector, checking for corrosion, bent pins, and chafed insulation.
  4. Back-probe the LDP connector to verify battery voltage on the power feed, a good ground, and the expected reference voltage on the sense line with the pump disconnected.
  5. Inspect the vacuum/pressure hose between the LDP and the EVAP system for cracks, disconnection, or blockage, and check the associated changeover valve operation if equipped.
  6. If pump power, ground, reference, and hose integrity are all good, replace the leak detection pump; only after all of the above should a PCM fault be considered.
