P2402 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a high voltage condition in the control circuit for the evaporative emission (EVAP) system leak detection pump. This pump pressurizes the EVAP system during self-tests to check for leaks. A high circuit voltage typically means the driver circuit inside the PCM is seeing voltage when it should be low, or the pump's internal windings are shorted to power.

4. PCM driver circuit failure

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data; note if P2402 is current or pending.
  2. Visually inspect the leak detection pump, its connector, and the wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or chafing.
  3. Disconnect the pump connector and measure resistance across the pump terminals; compare to manufacturer specification (typically a few ohms).
  4. With the key on, engine off, back-probe the pump control wire at the PCM connector and verify the PCM pulls the line low when commanding the pump on.
  5. If wiring and pump check good, perform a PCM output state test with a scan tool to confirm the driver toggles correctly; replace PCM only if the driver is proven faulty.
