P2294 indicates the engine computer has detected an open circuit in the control side of the secondary fuel pressure regulator (designated 'B'). This is an electrical fault in the regulator's command circuit, not a measured fuel-pressure performance problem. The computer cannot send current to the regulator because the path is broken somewhere between the PCM and the regulator.

1. Failed fuel pressure regulator solenoid (internal open)

The regulator's internal electromagnetic coil has broken or burned open, so the PCM sees infinite resistance on the control circuit. This is the single most common cause of a confirmed open-circuit code.

2. Wiring harness damage

A chafed, broken, or cut wire in the regulator control circuit creates an open path. Harness damage near the engine, frame routing points, or areas subject to heat and vibration is typical.

3. Connector corrosion or pushed pin

Corroded, bent, or pushed-back terminals at the regulator or PCM connector can interrupt the circuit while appearing visually connected. This is common on older vehicles or those exposed to moisture.

4. Blown fuse or open in power feed

Some regulator circuits share a fused power feed; a blown fuse or open fusible link can prevent the regulator from operating and trigger an open-circuit code depending on system design.

5. PCM driver failure

The internal driver transistor inside the PCM that commands the regulator has failed open. This is genuinely rare and should only be considered after the regulator, wiring, and connector are proven good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Clear the code and reconfirm it returns under the conditions described; note any related fuel-pressure or sensor codes.
  2. Perform a thorough visual inspection of the regulator connector, PCM connector, and the harness between them for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.
  3. Check the fuse that feeds the regulator control circuit, if applicable to the vehicle's wiring diagram.
  4. Disconnect the regulator connector and measure coil resistance across the regulator terminals; compare to specification. An out-of-range or infinite reading confirms a failed regulator.
  5. Back-probe the regulator connector and verify PCM command (power/ground or pulse) is reaching the connector using a digital multimeter or test lamp while the code is active.
  6. Only after the regulator, wiring, connector, and fuse are all proven good, evaluate the PCM driver as a last resort.
