P2290 indicates that the engine computer has detected that the fuel injector control pressure is lower than the commanded target. This typically occurs in diesel engines that use high-pressure engine oil to actuate the fuel injectors. When the oil pressure fails to reach the required level, the injectors cannot deliver the correct amount of fuel for combustion.

1. Internal high-pressure oil leaks

Leaking O-rings on fuel injectors, standpipes, or dummy plugs allow high-pressure oil to bleed off, preventing the system from building adequate pressure.

2. Faulty Injector Pressure Regulator (IPR) valve

The IPR controls the pressure by regulating oil flow; if it sticks open or fails internally, the system cannot maintain the required pressure.

3. Defective Injector Control Pressure (ICP) sensor

A failing ICP sensor may report falsely low pressure to the computer, triggering the code even if actual system pressure is normal.

4. Low engine oil level or poor oil quality

Insufficient oil volume or severely degraded oil lacking the correct viscosity can starve the high-pressure pump, preventing pressure buildup.

5. High-pressure oil pump (HPOP) failure

Physical wear or internal mechanical failure within the high-pressure oil pump can result in an inability to generate the commanded pressure.

6. PCM/ECM failure

A failure in the PCM driver circuit for the IPR valve is possible, but this is exceptionally rare and almost never the root cause of this code.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify engine oil level and condition, ensuring the correct oil viscosity is used and that the oil is not aerated or severely degraded.
  2. Connect a diagnostic scanner to monitor live data, comparing the commanded ICP pressure versus the actual ICP sensor reading.
  3. Inspect the ICP sensor and IPR valve wiring harnesses for chafing, corrosion, or loose connections that could cause erroneous readings or IPR operation.
  4. Perform a high-pressure oil system air leak test to isolate internal leaks, such as failed injector O-rings or leaking standpipes.
  5. Test the IPR valve operation and resistance if the system fails to build pressure but has no observable external or internal leaks.
  6. Measure high-pressure oil pump output directly using mechanical gauges if all electrical components and seals check out normally.
