P2269 sets when the powertrain control module detects a malfunction in the water‑in‑fuel condition sensor circuit. The sensor, usually found on diesel vehicles, monitors water contamination in the fuel; an abnormal voltage, resistance, or open/short in the circuit triggers the code and illuminates the MIL.

1. Defective water‑in‑fuel sensor

4. Poor ground or incorrect reference voltage

If the sensor’s ground circuit is compromised or the reference voltage from the PCM is incorrect, the circuit will report an abnormal value.

5. Rare: ECM/PCM fault

A failure of the engine control module itself is the least likely cause and should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and grounds have been verified as good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Connect an OBD‑II scanner, record any stored codes and freeze‑frame data, then clear the code and see if it returns.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the water‑in‑fuel sensor, its wiring harness, and the connector for obvious damage, corrosion, or loose contacts.
  3. Check the sensor’s resistance and voltage output against manufacturer specifications using a multimeter (with the circuit de‑energized when appropriate).
  4. Inspect the fuel for water contamination; drain the water separator or fuel filter bowl if water is present.
  5. Test the circuit for proper ground, power, and signal voltages with a multimeter or oscilloscope to confirm there are no opens or shorts.
  6. If the sensor and wiring test good, verify the ECM’s reference voltage and ground signals; consider swapping the sensor with a known‑good unit to rule out a sporadic failure before replacing the PCM.
