P2265 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a signal from the water-in-fuel sensor that is outside the expected range or does not change as anticipated during normal operation. This sensor monitors the water separator/fuel filter for excess water accumulation.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed water-in-fuel sensor

The sensor element itself is the most common failure point, often due to internal corrosion or contamination from prolonged exposure to fuel and water.

2. Wiring or connector damage

Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring and connectors at the sensor or along the harness can create an open, short, or high-resistance condition.

3. Excessive water in fuel separator

If the water separator is full, the sensor may report a continuous high-water condition that the PCM interprets as a circuit performance fault.

4. Contaminated or incorrect fuel

High water content from bad fuel, or use of gasoline in a diesel system, can trigger a genuine high-water signal that mimics a sensor fault.

5. PCM software or hardware fault

A control module issue is rare; it should be considered only after sensor, wiring, and fuel-condition causes have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and freeze-frame data; note any companion codes (e.g., fuel pressure, fuel composition).
  2. Visually inspect the water-in-fuel sensor, its connector, and the associated wiring for corrosion, damage, or loose terminals.
  3. Drain the water separator/fuel filter housing and recheck for code recurrence after a drive cycle.
  4. Test sensor resistance and signal voltage per manufacturer specifications; compare to a known-good value.
  5. Verify fuel quality and water content; replace fuel filter and purge system if contamination is found.
