Because the sensor is mounted in the hot exhaust system, its harness is exposed to heat, vibration, and road debris. Cracked insulation, broken strands, or wires shorting against the chassis or exhaust are very common triggers for an intermittent heater circuit code.

3. Corroded, loose, or contaminated connector

The NOx sensor electrical connector is exposed to moisture, road salt, and underbody contamination. Green corrosion, bent or backed-out pins, or water intrusion into the connector can cause intermittent contact that the PCM interprets as a heater sense circuit fault.

4. Exhaust leaks or contamination at the sensor port

Exhaust leaks near the sensor bung, oil or coolant consumption contaminating the sensor element, or soot fouling can alter the electrical characteristics of the heater circuit and produce intermittent fault codes.

5. Issues in the SCR/DEF system affecting sensor reference

A failing DEF pump, clogged DEF injector, or low DEF quality can change exhaust chemistry and temperature, which in some cases contributes to NOx sensor heater circuit irregularities. Related SCR codes are usually present.

6. Faulty powertrain control module (PCM/ECM)

The PCM driver for the NOx sensor heater or its sense input circuit is a rare cause of P2212. A control module should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, connectors, and related aftertreatment components have all been ruled out.

  3. Measure the NOx sensor heater element resistance with the connector disconnected and compare to the manufacturer's specification; an open or out-of-range reading indicates an internal heater failure.
  4. With the connector plugged in, use a lab scope or multimeter to check for proper power supply, ground, and PWM control signal on the heater circuit while the key is on or while the engine is running.
