P2187 — System Too Lean Idle Bank 1

P2187 means the engine control module (PCM) has detected a fuel mixture that is too lean (not enough fuel for the amount of air entering the cylinders) specifically while the engine is idling on Bank 1. The PCM watches the long-term fuel trim at idle; when it has to add a large amount of fuel to keep the mixture stoichiometric, this code sets. A lean idle condition is most often caused by unmetered air entering the engine or by an under-delivery of fuel.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Vacuum leak (intake gasket, cracked hose, brake booster line, throttle body gasket)

Unmetered air entering downstream of the mass airflow (MAF) sensor leans the mixture, and the effect is largest at idle when the engine tolerates even small air errors poorly. This is the single most common cause of P2187.

2. Dirty or failing mass airflow (MAF) sensor

A contaminated MAF under-reports incoming air mass, so the PCM injects less fuel than the engine actually needs. Symptoms are often most pronounced at idle and low RPM.

3. Stuck-open idle air control (IAC) valve or dirty throttle plate (drive-by-wire throttle body)

Excess air bypassing the closed throttle plate leans the idle mixture. Carbon buildup on the throttle plate edge or a sticking IAC can hold idle airflow higher than commanded.

4. Low fuel pressure (weak pump, clogged filter, failing pressure regulator, weak injector)

Insufficient fuel delivery cannot meet the engine's demand at idle and part-throttle, producing a lean condition. Fuel pressure should be tested against factory specification.

5. Leaking PCV valve, cracked PCV hose, or stuck-open oil-separator / breather system

A compromised PCV system admits extra metered-by-leak air into the intake, leaning the mixture most noticeably at idle and low load.

6. Failed Bank 1 upstream oxygen sensor or exhaust leak ahead of it

A pre-catalyst exhaust leak or a lazy/biased upstream O2 sensor can mislead the PCM into thinking the mixture is richer than it actually is, pulling fuel trims lean.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan live data with the engine fully warm at idle: record long-term fuel trim (LTFT), short-term fuel trim (STFT), MAF grams/sec, engine RPM, and coolant temperature. A LTFT substantially above +10% at idle confirms a real lean condition and the focus of the diagnosis.
  2. Perform a careful visual inspection of the intake boot, intake manifold gasket, all vacuum hoses, brake booster line, and PCV plumbing for cracks, splits, or disconnections.
  3. Smoke-test the intake and vacuum system to locate unmetered air leaks that may not be visible to the eye.
  4. Inspect the MAF sensor element for contamination; if dirty, clean it with an appropriate MAF cleaner and re-evaluate. Verify MAF reading at idle is within the manufacturer's expected range.
  5. Connect a fuel-pressure gauge and check system pressure with key on and again at idle against specification. Low or slowly dropping pressure points to pump, filter, regulator, or injector issues.
  6. Inspect the exhaust manifold and pre-catalyst piping on Bank 1 for leaks (listen for ticking, watch upstream O2 response to propane enrichment), and confirm the upstream oxygen sensor switches properly and responds quickly.

Does P2187 mean my PCM (engine computer) needs to be replaced?

Almost never. Drivers are frequently told to replace the PCM for P2187, but that is usually incorrect. The vast majority of P2187 cases are caused by vacuum leaks, MAF sensor issues, throttle body / IAC problems, or fuel delivery faults. The PCM should be considered only after every other cause has been ruled out with real measurements.

What is the difference between P2187 and P0171?

P0171 means the system is running lean across the full operating range (idle and part-throttle and wide-open throttle). P2187 is set only when the lean condition is detected specifically at idle or low RPM, so it is a more focused fuel-trim code that points more strongly at idle-specific issues such as vacuum leaks or a sticking idle air passage.

Is it safe to keep driving with P2187?

Short trips are usually possible, but a persistent lean condition can cause engine overheating, misfires, and eventual damage to the catalytic converter. The code should be diagnosed and repaired as soon as practical.
