P0792 means the powertrain control module has detected an intermediate shaft speed sensor signal that is outside its expected range, erratic, or inconsistent with other transmission speed sensors. This sensor reports the rotational speed of an intermediate shaft inside the automatic transmission so the control module can verify gear ratios and manage shifting.

1. Failed or degraded intermediate shaft speed sensor

The sensor coil, magnet, or internal circuitry can weaken or fail with heat and vibration, producing a weak, noisy, or out-of-range signal.

2. Wiring or connector fault

Open, shorted, or corroded wires and poor pin connections between the sensor and the control module are common, especially in harnesses that flex near the transmission.

3. Damaged or contaminated reluctor ring

A chipped, cracked, loose, or debris-covered tone ring changes the magnetic pattern the sensor reads, causing range or performance errors.

4. Internal transmission mechanical fault

Excessive clutch slippage, a broken planetary gear set, or other internal problems can make intermediate shaft speed differ from expected values.

5. Low or degraded transmission fluid

Fluid that is low, overheated, or contaminated can affect hydraulic clutch apply and shaft behavior, indirectly causing speed-sensor performance faults.

6. Control-module signal-processing issue

A true PCM or TCM failure is uncommon; it should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, reluctor, and mechanical conditions have been ruled out.

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data; note any related transmission or speed-sensor codes.
  2. Visually inspect the intermediate shaft speed sensor, its connector, and the nearby harness for corrosion, oil contamination, chafing, or terminal damage.
  3. Test the sensor's resistance and output signal while the shaft is rotated by hand or with the engine running, comparing results to specification.
  4. Check the reluctor ring for cracks, missing teeth, debris, or looseness during sensor removal or transmission service access.
  5. Compare intermediate shaft speed data against input and output speed sensors during a monitored test drive to identify abnormal ratios.
