P0791 — Intermediate Shaft Speed Sensor Circuit

P0791 means the powertrain control module has detected an electrical or rationality fault in the intermediate shaft speed sensor circuit. This sensor reports the rotational speed of a specific automatic transmission shaft, and the PCM uses that signal for shift timing, clutch control, and torque-converter lockup. When the signal is missing, erratic, or out of an expected range, the code is stored.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty intermediate shaft speed sensor

Internal coil, Hall-element, or magnetic-pickup failure in the sensor is the most common cause, often from age, heat, or exposure to transmission fluid.

2. Wiring or connector fault

Chafed, pinched, corroded, or loose terminals in the harness between the sensor and PCM can create an open, short, or intermittent signal.

3. Damaged or contaminated tone ring/reluctor

4. Low, degraded, or incorrect transmission fluid

Low or contaminated fluid can cause internal slippage and shaft-speed patterns that the PCM sees as implausible, producing a rationality fault.

5. Internal transmission mechanical fault

Worn clutches, bands, drums, or gearset problems can make the intermediate shaft speed differ from the commanded speed and trigger the code.

6. PCM fault (rare)

A failed input circuit inside the PCM is possible but uncommon; it should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and mechanical causes have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve freeze-frame data and confirm the code; visually inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, backed-out pins, and chafing.
  2. Check the transmission fluid level and condition; correct the level and inspect for burning, contamination, or metal debris.
  3. Test the sensor resistance, supply voltage, and output signal while the shaft is rotated as applicable; compare readings to specification.
  4. Inspect the tone ring/reluctor for damage, debris, and proper air gap/runout.
  5. Check circuit continuity and for shorts-to-ground or shorts-to-voltage between the sensor and PCM; repair wiring as needed.
  6. If all sensor, wiring, and mechanical tests pass, verify PCM inputs and consider PCM replacement only as a last resort.
