P0736 — Reverse Incorrect Ratio

Generic OBD-II · all makesPowertrain (engine & transmission)

P0736 indicates the Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected an invalid gear ratio for the reverse gear. The module compares expected input/output shaft speeds and finds they do not match the correct reverse gear ratio, suggesting the transmission is not engaging reverse properly or is slipping.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Low or contaminated transmission fluid

Insufficient fluid pressure or worn fluid cannot engage clutches/bands properly for reverse gear. This is the most common cause of ratio codes.

2. Faulty shift solenoid (reverse or line pressure solenoid)

Solenoids that control fluid flow to engage reverse may be stuck, clogged, or electrically failed, preventing proper gear engagement.

3. Worn or burnt clutch plates/bands

Internal clutch components that lock reverse gear are worn, burnt, or slipping, unable to maintain the required gear ratio.

4. Valve body malfunction

The valve body channels fluid to the reverse clutch; worn valves, clogged passages, or actuator failures can disrupt reverse engagement.

5. Internal transmission mechanical failure

Worn gears, bearings, or sun shell in the reverse gearset itself can cause incorrect ratio readings. Usually preceded by noise or failure of other gears.

6. Transmission Control Module (TCM) fault

Rare. The TCM may incorrectly calculate ratio due to faulty sensors or software error, but this should be diagnosis of elimination only.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Check transmission fluid level and fluid condition (burnt smell, dark color, particles)
  2. Connect scan tool and retrieve all transmission codes, noting freeze frame data
  3. Check input and output speed sensor readings while in reverse to confirm ratio calculation
  4. Perform transmission pressure test to verify line pressure is within specification
  5. Inspect shift solenoids and wiring for correct operation and no open/short circuits
  6. If no other causes found, verify TCM ground connections and power supply before considering TCM replacement

Frequently asked

Do I need to replace the transmission control module for P0736?

Rarely. The TCM/PCM is almost never the cause of P0736. Mechanics sometimes replace it unnecessarily when the real issue is low fluid, a faulty solenoid, or worn clutches. The TCM should only be considered after all mechanical and hydraulic causes are thoroughly ruled out.

Can I keep driving with P0736?

It is not recommended. Driving in reverse may be unreliable or impossible, and continued driving with a transmission issue can cause internal damage, leading to costly repairs.

Will adding transmission fluid fix P0736?

If low fluid is the cause, adding fluid may resolve the code temporarily. However, if the fluid is burnt, contaminated, or the system has an underlying leak, the code will likely return and further repair will be needed.

Is P0736 caused by the engine or transmission?

This code is entirely transmission-related. The engine computer (PCM) and engine mechanical issues do not affect the reverse gear ratio calculation.
