P0533 means the powertrain control module (PCM) is receiving a higher-than-expected voltage from the air-conditioning refrigerant pressure sensor. This can indicate genuinely high refrigerant pressure, a failed sensor, or a wiring fault that makes the signal circuit read artificially high.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed A/C refrigerant pressure sensor

The sensor itself is the most common source. Its internal resistance or voltage output can drift high, sending an out-of-range signal even when actual system pressure is normal.

2. Short to voltage in sensor wiring

The signal, reference, or ground circuit may be shorted to another power feed, or the signal wire may be pinched against battery voltage, causing the PCM to see a high reading.

3. Actual excessive refrigerant pressure

An overcharged system, blocked orifice tube/expansion valve, restricted condenser, or inoperative condenser fan can raise real pressure above the sensor's calibrated threshold.

4. Corroded, damaged, or poorly connected sensor connector

Connector terminal issues can alter circuit resistance, create unwanted voltage drops, or allow wires to contact each other and produce a falsely high signal.

5. PCM fault

A rare internal PCM issue could misinterpret a normal sensor voltage as high, but this should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and actual refrigerant pressure are proven correct.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, or evidence of shorting to nearby power circuits
  2. Connect a manifold gauge set and compare actual high/low-side pressures to the sensor voltage output at the same operating condition
  3. With the key on and engine off, measure the sensor signal voltage against specifications; a reading near or above reference voltage with normal pressure points to a sensor or wiring fault
  4. Perform a circuit check for shorts to voltage, opens, and excessive resistance in the sensor signal, 5 V reference, and ground circuits
  5. Substitute a known-good sensor or compare its output to the suspect sensor under identical pressure conditions
  6. If all sensor, wiring, and pressure tests are normal and the code returns, evaluate the PCM's interpretation of the signal as a last step
