P0463 indicates the PCM is seeing an abnormally high voltage from the fuel level sensor circuit, which typically points to an open circuit or loss of continuity in the sensor signal path. The fuel level sensor is a variable resistor (rheostat) mounted inside the fuel tank, usually as part of the fuel pump sending unit assembly. A high-voltage condition generally means the signal wire is disconnected, the sensor has failed open, or the float mechanism is stuck.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed fuel level sensor

The internal rheostat or contact wiper wears out, corrodes, or breaks, creating an open circuit. This is the single most common cause of P0463 and typically requires replacement of the sending unit assembly.

2. Open or corroded wiring/connector at fuel pump module

The electrical connector at the top of the fuel tank is exposed to moisture and road debris. Corroded pins, pushed-back terminals, or a broken signal wire between the tank and the PCM will produce a high-voltage reading.

3. Float mechanism stuck, bent, or detached

The float arm can become binding, bent against the tank wall, or separated from the sensor, leaving the wiper at the full-resistance position. This is more common in vehicles that have had fuel pump service or rough fuel sender installation.

4. Open in signal wire between connector and PCM

A chafed, pinched, or rodent-damaged signal wire along the chassis harness can interrupt the sensor return path, causing the PCM to see reference voltage on the signal line.

5. PCM/ECM internal input fault

Rarely, an internal failure in the PCM's fuel level sensor input circuit can cause a false high-voltage reading. This should only be considered after the sensor, float, and all wiring have been definitively verified as good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for all stored codes and observe the live fuel level sensor voltage or percentage; compare it to the actual fuel level in the tank to confirm the discrepancy.
  2. Visually inspect the fuel pump module connector (often accessible under the rear seat or in the trunk) for corrosion, bent pins, moisture intrusion, or loose terminals.
  3. Perform a wiggle test on the harness between the fuel tank connector and the PCM while monitoring sensor voltage on a scan tool to identify intermittent opens.
  4. Back-probe the fuel level sensor signal and ground at the tank connector; verify reference voltage is present on the supply pin and that the signal pin changes voltage when the float is moved manually.
  5. If accessible, remove the fuel pump/sending unit assembly and sweep the float through its full range while measuring resistance; compare to published specifications for smooth, continuous change.
  6. Only after the sensor, float, connector, and harness wiring are all verified good, test the PCM input pin for proper reference and ground; consider PCM replacement only if an internal input circuit fault is confirmed.
