P0460 — Fuel Level Sensor Circuit

P0460 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an irrational or missing signal from the fuel level sensor circuit. The sensor, usually integrated into the fuel pump module, sends a variable resistance signal that the PCM converts into a fuel-level reading.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed fuel level sensor (sender)

The resistive element or float arm inside the tank wears out or corrodes, producing an open, short, or out-of-range signal.

2. Wiring or connector damage

Corroded pins, chafed wires, or broken conductors in the harness between the tank module and the PCM interrupt the sensor signal.

3. Poor ground at the fuel pump module

A high-resistance ground path shifts the sensor voltage reference, causing the PCM to read an implausible level.

4. Instrument cluster or gauge circuit fault

On some architectures the cluster processes the sensor signal; a cluster failure can set the code even if the sensor is functional.

5. PCM internal fault (rare)

An internal driver or analog-to-digital converter failure in the PCM can misread a valid sensor signal; this is a last-resort diagnosis after all wiring and sensor tests pass.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and freeze-frame data; note any related codes (e.g., P0461-P0463).
  2. Visually inspect the fuel pump module connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, or chafed wires.
  3. With the key on, measure reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector; compare to service specifications.
  4. Remove the fuel pump module and bench-test the sender resistance at empty, half, and full float positions.
  5. Perform a continuity and voltage-drop test on the signal wire between the module connector and the PCM.
  6. If all circuit tests pass, verify cluster operation with a scan tool data display before considering PCM replacement.

Will replacing the PCM fix P0460?

Almost never. The code is almost always caused by the sensor, its wiring, or the ground connection. PCM replacement should only be considered after every circuit and component test has been verified.

Can I drive with P0460?

The vehicle will run, but the fuel gauge will be unreliable. You risk running out of fuel unexpectedly, and on some vehicles the PCM may disable the fuel pump if it believes the tank is empty.

Does the fuel tank have to be removed to test the sensor?

On most vehicles the fuel pump module (with integrated sender) is accessed through a service port under the rear seat or trunk floor; tank removal is usually not required.

Why does the gauge sometimes work and sometimes not?
