P0436 indicates that the PCM has detected a voltage or resistance reading from the Bank 2, Sensor 1 catalyst temperature sensor that is outside the expected range. The sensor monitors the temperature of the catalytic converter to help the engine control system manage fuel trimming and emissions.

1. Faulty catalyst temperature sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 1)

The sensor itself may have failed electrically or mechanically, giving readings that are too high, too low, or intermittent.

2. Wiring harness damage or poor connector contact

Corroded pins, broken wires, or loose connections in the sensor circuit can cause abnormal voltage or resistance values.

3. Excessive exhaust heat exposure

Heat damage to the sensor or its wiring from a leaking exhaust leak or a severely overheated converter can degrade sensor performance.

4. Catalytic converter failure

A severely degraded converter may not reach normal operating temperature, causing the sensor to read out‑of‑range values.

5. PCM/ECM internal fault (rare)

Only after ruling out sensor, wiring, and converter issues should a malfunctioning PCM be considered, as it is an uncommon cause of P0436.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the Bank 2 sensor 1 wiring and connector for damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  2. Measure sensor resistance (or voltage) at the connector with the engine off and compare to manufacturer specifications.
  3. Perform a live data scan while the engine is warmed to see if the sensor temperature tracks expected rise and fall patterns.
  4. Check for exhaust leaks upstream of the sensor that could artificially cool the sensor or affect its signal.
  5. If the sensor and wiring test within spec, perform a catalyst temperature test (e.g., using a temperature probe) to verify proper converter operation.

Do I need to replace the PCM when I get a P0436 code?

In most cases no. The PCM is rarely the cause of P0436. Replace the sensor, wiring, or address any exhaust issues first; only consider PCM replacement after all other possibilities have been eliminated.

Can a bad oxygen sensor cause a P0436 code?

A faulty O2 sensor can trigger related catalyst efficiency codes (P0420/P0430) but it does not directly cause the temperature‑sensor‑range code. However, a severely malfunctioning O2 sensor may indirectly affect catalyst temperature, so it should be checked if other codes are present.

Will a temporary fix, like unplugging the sensor, clear the code?

Unplugging the sensor will usually set a different code (sensor circuit open) and will not resolve the underlying issue. The engine may also run poorly or fail emissions, so this is not a viable repair.

Is it normal for the code to appear only when the engine is cold?
