P0431 indicates that the powertrain control module (PCM) has determined that the catalytic converter on Bank 2 (the bank of cylinders opposite cylinder #1) is not reducing emissions efficiently enough. The PCM monitors oxygen sensor readings before and after the catalytic converter and compares them; when the post-converter sensor signal resembles the pre-converter signal too closely, the converter is deemed ineffective. This code typically relates to the first (upstream) catalytic converter in Bank 2.

1. Failing catalytic converter

3. Faulty oxygen sensors

4. Engine running excessively rich or lean

Fuel system faults such as a leaking injector, bad MAF sensor, or faulty O2 sensor can cause an air-fuel mixture imbalance that overwhelms the catalytic converter.

5. Contaminated or poisoned converter

Oil consumption, coolant leaks, or use of leaded fuel/incorrect additives can coat the catalyst surface and permanently reduce efficiency.

6. PCM/ECM fault

A malfunctioning PCM can miscalculate catalyst efficiency, but this is a rare diagnosis and should only be considered after all other causes are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored diagnostic trouble codes and freeze frame data; note whether related fuel or sensor codes are present.
  2. Visually inspect the Bank 2 exhaust system for leaks, damage, or missing heat shields upstream of the catalytic converter.
  3. Test the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors on Bank 2 for proper operation, cross-counting, and response rate using a scan tool or oscilloscope.
  4. Check fuel system operation: inspect injector function, fuel pressure, MAF/Knock sensor readings, and look for long-term fuel trim anomalies.
  5. Perform a catalytic converter efficiency test (typically using a four-gas analyzer or exhaust gas temperature measurement) to confirm actual converter failure.
  6. If all physical components check normal, verify PCM ground integrity and consider an alternate cause before concluding the PCM itself is faulty.
