P0407 — Egr Sensor B Circuit Low

P0407 means the powertrain control module has detected a below-specification voltage signal from the EGR system’s designated "B" sensor, which reports EGR valve position or differential pressure. A sustained low reading usually indicates the sensor circuit is reporting near 0 V, so the PCM may disable EGR control and store the code.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty EGR sensor B

The sensor’s internal element can fail, stick, or produce a permanently low output, causing the PCM to see a circuit-low condition.

2. Wiring short to ground or open circuit

The signal, 5 V reference, or ground wire between the sensor and PCM may be shorted to ground, chafed, or broken, pulling the signal voltage low.

3. Poor electrical connection at the sensor or PCM

Corroded, bent, or moisture-filled terminals in the sensor connector can increase resistance or create a partial short, resulting in a low-voltage reading.

4. Low or missing 5 V reference supply

If the PCM reference voltage to the sensor is lower than specified, the sensor output will also read low and set P0407.

5. Restricted or leaking EGR pressure hoses

On differential-pressure-style EGR sensors, clogged, cracked, or incorrectly connected hoses can produce an implausibly low signal.

6. PCM fault

A rare PCM failure that misreads the sensor or supplies an incorrect reference voltage; this should only be considered after wiring, connectors, and the sensor are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Read live data and freeze frame to confirm the EGR sensor B voltage is near 0 V and note when the fault occurs.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, damaged pins, oil contamination, or chafing that could short the circuit.
  3. Check the sensor’s 5 V reference and ground circuits with the key on; compare readings to manufacturer specifications.
  4. Command the EGR system on/off or manually vary valve position/vacuum while watching sensor voltage; replace the sensor if it does not respond smoothly across its range.
  5. If the sensor and wiring test normal but the reference voltage is missing or the signal is still misread, verify PCM output and consider PCM issues only as a last resort.
