P0388 — Crankshaft Position Sensor B Circuit High

P0388 means the engine control module has detected an abnormally high voltage or no usable pulse on the crankshaft position sensor "B" signal circuit. The ECM needs a reliable crankshaft-speed signal for ignition timing and fuel injection, so a stuck-high or missing signal can disrupt engine operation or prevent starting.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty crankshaft position sensor B

An internal failure in the sensor can pull the signal circuit high or stop producing pulses, making the ECM report a high-circuit condition.

2. Wiring problem shorted to voltage or open

The signal wire may be rubbed through and shorted to a voltage feed, or an open conductor can leave the circuit floating at a high voltage.

3. Connector or terminal fault

Corroded, bent, backed-out, or moisture-contaminated pins at the sensor or ECM connector can raise resistance or alter circuit voltage.

4. Incorrect air gap or damaged reluctor ring

Excessive gap, a loose sensor, or a chipped/dirty reluctor wheel can weaken or distort the signal enough to be interpreted as a circuit fault.

5. ECM/PCM internal fault

A rare failure of the ECM input circuit can misread a normal sensor signal as high; this should only be considered after the sensor and wiring are proven good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the sensor connector, harness, and ground for damage, corrosion, oil contamination, or chafing near hot or moving components.
  2. Measure the crankshaft position sensor B resistance and compare it to manufacturer specifications; replace the sensor if it is out of spec.
  3. With a scan tool or lab scope, monitor the CKP B signal while cranking to see if a clean pulse is present; also verify reference voltage and ground if applicable.
  4. Disconnect the sensor and ECM, then check the signal circuit for continuity, excessive resistance, and shorts to voltage, ground, or other circuits.
  5. If the sensor, wiring, connectors, and reluctor are all verified good and the code persists, only then evaluate the ECM as a last-resort cause.
