P0180 indicates a malfunction in the fuel temperature sensor 'A' circuit. This sensor reports fuel temperature to the powertrain control module (PCM), which uses the reading to adjust fuel delivery, injection timing, and, on some systems, to compensate for cold fuel density. The code is set when the PCM detects a voltage, resistance, or signal value from the sensor that is outside its calibrated range or out of agreement with other inputs.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed fuel temperature sensor

The sensor itself, typically a thermistor, drifts out of specification or fails open/short internally. This is the most common cause of P0180 and is usually the first component to verify.

2. Damaged sensor wiring

Heat, vibration, and routing near the engine or fuel system can chafe, melt, or break the sensor wires, producing an open or shorted circuit that triggers the code.

3. Corroded or loose connector

The sensor connector is often exposed to fuel, moisture, and heat. Corroded, bent, or backed-out terminals interrupt the signal or reference voltage and set P0180.

4. Open or short in the harness between sensor and PCM

Insulation damage or a break anywhere along the dedicated sensor circuit (signal, 5-volt reference, or ground) will appear as a circuit fault to the PCM.

5. Contaminated or partially failed sensor due to fuel quality

Sustained exposure to degraded fuel, water contamination, or varnish buildup can shift sensor readings and eventually cause an out-of-range condition.

6. PCM driver or input failure

Although the code is set by the PCM, a true internal PCM fault causing P0180 is uncommon. PCM failure should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and connectors have all been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Connect a scan tool and confirm P0180 is present; record freeze-frame data and check for related sensor or fuel trim codes.
  2. Locate the fuel temperature sensor (commonly on the fuel rail, in the fuel tank sender assembly, or integrated with the fuel pressure sensor) and visually inspect the connector for damage, corrosion, or contamination.
  3. With the connector disconnected, measure sensor resistance across its terminals and compare the reading to the manufacturer-specified temperature/resistance table to test the sensor element.
  4. With the connector plugged in and the key on, backprobe the harness to verify presence of the reference voltage and a good ground at the sensor connector.
  5. Inspect the harness routing for chafing, heat damage, or pinched sections, especially where it passes near exhaust components or the fuel line.
  6. If the sensor, wiring, and connectors all test good, evaluate the PCM input for the same fault before considering module replacement.
