P0118 means the engine control module is seeing a higher-than-expected voltage or resistance from Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor circuit 1, which it interprets as an abnormally low coolant temperature or an open/high-resistance condition. The ECT sensor is a thermistor whose resistance drops as coolant warms up, so a 'high' signal usually points to an open signal path or a sensor that is not reading correctly.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed or drifting ECT sensor

The thermistor inside the sensor can crack, corrode, or internally open, producing a high-resistance signal that the PCM reads as circuit high. This is the single most common cause of P0118.

2. Wiring or connector fault in the ECT circuit

An open signal wire, poor pin connection, corrosion, or a short-to-voltage on the signal or 5 V reference circuit can push the reading above the normal range.

3. Low coolant level or air pocket around the sensor

If the sensor tip is exposed to air instead of coolant, it can read much colder than the actual engine, producing a voltage that sets P0118.

4. Incorrect sensor or cooling-system modification

Using the wrong ECT sensor for the application, or an aftermarket adapter or thermostat that changes coolant flow, can produce an out-of-range signal.

5. PCM calibration or internal PCM fault

A rare internal PCM fault or corrupted calibration can misread a normal sensor signal. This should be considered only after the sensor, wiring, and cooling system have been verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Read live data and compare the ECT reading to intake-air temperature after a cold soak; they should be close.
  2. Inspect the ECT sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, pushed-back pins, chafing, or evidence of short-to-voltage.
  3. Measure sensor resistance across the ECT terminals and compare to the manufacturer's temperature/resistance chart; an open or out-of-range reading confirms a bad sensor.
  4. Back-probe the signal wire with the sensor connected and key on; compare the voltage to the specification and check for a stable 5 V reference at the sensor.
  5. If all sensor and wiring tests pass and the PCM still reports an unrealistic high value, investigate PCM issues after ruling out everything else.
