P0113 indicates that the engine computer is seeing a voltage signal from the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor that is higher than expected, which typically means the circuit is open or the sensor is disconnected. The computer interprets the high voltage as an extremely cold intake temperature, which can cause incorrect fuel calculations.

1. Disconnected or corroded IAT sensor connector

The wiring plug at the IAT sensor is loose, corroded, or not fully seated, creating an open circuit that causes the high-voltage reading.

2. Open or damaged wiring in the IAT circuit

A broken wire, chafed insulation, or rodent damage between the sensor and the engine computer interrupts the signal return path.

3. Failed intake air temperature sensor

The thermistor inside the sensor has failed open internally, producing an out-of-range high voltage signal to the computer.

4. Corroded or spread terminals at the PCM connector

The pins at the engine computer side of the harness are corroded or pushed back, preventing proper circuit completion.

5. Failed engine computer (PCM/ECM)

An internal failure in the computer's input circuit is extremely rare for this code and should only be considered after all wiring and sensor checks are exhausted.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the IAT sensor connector for corrosion, loose fit, or bent pins, and verify it is fully seated.
  2. With the key on and engine off, use a scan tool to read live IAT temperature; if it reads -40°F or similar extreme cold, suspect an open circuit.
  3. Disconnect the IAT sensor and use a multimeter to check for reference voltage and ground at the connector; absence of either points to a wiring issue.
  4. Perform a continuity test on both signal and ground wires between the sensor connector and the PCM connector to locate opens or high resistance.
  5. Back-probe the sensor signal wire while wiggling the harness to check for intermittent opens caused by internal wire breaks.
  6. If all wiring and the sensor test good, inspect PCM connector pins for corrosion or spread before considering computer replacement.
