If multiple systems share Ground D, a downstream issue on that same ground path can cause the code to set even when the local connection looks fine.

6. Failed control module (internal ground reference fault)

Uncommon. The module's own internal ground reference has failed. This should only be considered after all external ground, connector, and wiring causes are ruled out with a voltage-drop test.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Identify the exact Ground D location and the affected module using the manufacturer's service information.
  2. Visually inspect the ground strap, eyelet, and mounting surface for corrosion, paint, looseness, or physical damage.
  3. Disconnect the ground, clean the contact surfaces to bare metal, apply a light film of protective grease if appropriate, and retorque the fastener to specification.
  4. Perform a voltage-drop test across the ground circuit while it is loaded; the reading should typically be below 0.1 V.
  5. Inspect the module-side connector for bent, corroded, or backed-out ground pins and verify end-to-end harness continuity and isolation from chassis ground where required.
