U0901 — Invalid Data From Ion Sense Module

U0901 means the powertrain control module has received data from the ion sense module that is out of range, implausible, or corrupted. The ion sense module monitors ionization current during combustion to help detect knock or misfire events. When the PCM cannot trust that data, it sets this code and may suspend related diagnostics or protective strategies.

1. Faulty ion sense module

Internal damage from heat, vibration, or moisture can cause the module to transmit invalid or intermittent data even though it still communicates on the bus.

  2. Check battery and charging system condition, and verify module power, ground, and wake-up circuits against manufacturer specifications under load.
  3. Test network integrity by measuring CAN/LIN resistance and voltage, and check for intermittent shorts or opens between the module and PCM.
  4. If wiring and power are correct, substitute or test a known-good ion sense module to confirm whether invalid data stops.
  5. Check for applicable technical service bulletins and software updates; reflash the PCM or ion sense module only if indicated.
