U0643 is a network communication code indicating the engine control module (or other master module) has stopped receiving messages from the turbocharger/supercharger temperature sensor module over the vehicle's data bus. It does not mean the air charge is too hot or too cold — it means the two modules are no longer talking, so temperature readings from that sensor are unavailable.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Damaged, corroded, or loose wiring/connector at the turbocharger temperature sensor

Heat, vibration, and oil exposure near the turbo make the harness and connector the single most common failure point. Broken wires, chafed insulation, or pushed-out pins interrupt the bus signals.

2. Failed turbocharger/supercharger temperature sensor module

The sensor itself contains a small electronic module that transmits on the data bus. Internal failure of that module is a common root cause once the harness has been ruled out.

3. Loss of power or ground supply to the sensor module

If the sensor module loses its 5 V reference or chassis ground, it cannot transmit on the bus, which is reported as lost communication rather than an out-of-range reading.

4. CAN bus / network wiring faults (high or low shorted, open, or high resistance)

A short to voltage, short to ground, or high-resistance connection on the communication pair can knock the sensor module off the bus.

5. Software or calibration issue requiring a reflash

Some manufacturers have released updated PCM or sensor module calibrations that resolve U0643, particularly when the sensor module boots but does not handshake correctly.

6. PCM (engine control module) internal failure

Rare, but a damaged transceiver in the PCM can stop communication with this specific module. This should only be considered after every other cause has been excluded.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored and pending codes with a scan tool and review the freeze-frame data to confirm the code is current and not historic.
  2. Perform a visual and hands-on inspection of the harness and connector at the turbocharger/supercharger temperature sensor, looking for chafing, melting, oil contamination, corrosion, and terminal tension.
  3. Back-probe the sensor connector to verify proper power supply, ground, and reference voltage with the ignition on.
  4. Use a scan tool or oscilloscope to monitor CAN bus activity at the sensor connector and confirm the sensor module is or is not transmitting.
  5. Check for applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for the specific vehicle before replacing parts, as reflashes have resolved this code on several applications.
  6. Substitute or test the sensor module only after the wiring, power, ground, and bus integrity have all been confirmed good.

Clearing the code does not repair the underlying problem. If the sensor module truly is off the network, the code will return immediately, and any associated limp-mode or boost-limiting behavior will not be resolved.

Is U0643 the same as a 'turbo temperature too high' code?

No. U0643 specifically means the temperature sensor module is not communicating on the data bus. A code indicating actual over-temperature would be a different, sensor-rationality or threshold code.
