U0636 means the control module that manages the hybrid/EV battery pack coolant control valve can no longer communicate with the valve or its built-in actuator/controller. The valve directs coolant flow to regulate battery temperature, so a communication failure can disrupt battery thermal management. The issue is usually in the valve, its wiring, or its power/ground circuit rather than the engine or battery control computer.

1. Faulty battery pack coolant control valve actuator

3. Power or ground loss to the valve

A blown fuse, faulty relay, bad ground eyelet, or corroded terminal can leave the coolant control valve offline even though the wiring is intact.

4. Network bus communication problem

High or low CAN/LIN circuit shorts to power or ground, open bus lines, or excessive resistance elsewhere on the network can prevent the module from reaching the valve.

5. Control module failure

The battery ECU, thermal management controller, or gateway module that talks to the valve could fail, but this is genuinely uncommon and should only be considered after wiring, power, and the valve are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve and document all DTCs, then inspect the coolant control valve connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, or moisture intrusion.
  2. Check the relevant fuse, relay, and ground for the valve circuit; confirm battery voltage and ground are present at the valve connector with the key on.
  3. Measure continuity and resistance on the communication lines between the valve and the controlling module, and compare to the vehicle's published values.
  4. Command the coolant control valve through a scan tool if supported; if it does not respond or actuate, the valve assembly is likely faulty.
  5. If the valve, wiring, and power/ground test normal, verify network integrity and consider a module issue only as a last resort.
