U0429 means a control module on the vehicle network received data from the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) that was corrupted, out-of-range, or otherwise implausible. It is a communication/validity fault, not a report that the SCCM itself necessarily failed, though a failing SCCM is the most common source. The code often appears alongside other U-codes or symptoms involving steering-column-mounted controls.

1. Faulty or failing Steering Column Control Module

The SCCM can develop internal faults that corrupt the data packets it transmits, even if the vehicle still starts and drives. This is statistically the most likely cause for U0429.

Corroded, bent, loose, or moisture-contaminated pins and harness damage at the column can introduce noise or signal loss that makes received data invalid.

3. Battery, charging, or ground issues

Low system voltage, weak battery, or poor grounds can cause modules to operate below specification and produce corrupted messages during cranking or high electrical load.

4. CAN bus network faults

Shorts, opens, or high resistance in the high-speed CAN circuits can distort messages between modules and trigger invalid-data codes for the SCCM.

5. Software or calibration error

Incorrect or outdated SCCM calibration, or a module that lost its learned values after a battery replacement or repair, can broadcast data another module rejects.

6. Receiving module fault

It is possible, though uncommon, that the module logging U0429 is misinterpreting good data due to its own internal fault; this should only be considered after the SCCM, wiring, and network are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Record all DTCs and freeze-frame data, then clear codes and determine under what conditions U0429 returns.
  2. Visually inspect the SCCM electrical connector and the column wiring harness for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, or moisture intrusion.
  3. Test battery state of charge, charging system voltage, and key power/ground circuits to the SCCM while operating column switches.
  4. Check live SCCM data on a scan tool for plausible steering-angle, switch-state, and counter values; compare with physical inputs.
  5. Perform any available SCCM initialization, steering-angle sensor reset, or software update procedures if wiring and voltage are normal.
  6. If all else is ruled out, replace or repair the SCCM; consider a receiving-module fault only after the SCCM and network are verified.
